Identity Theft
Were you aware that Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in the country? Safeguarding your identity is a top priority at High Desert State Bank. We believe it is important for you to be aware of the risks that exist in the world today and keep you informed of ways to prevent it.
What is Identity Theft? Identity theft happens when your personal information such as Social Security number, name, and date of birth are stolen and used by a thief to create a false identity and fraudulently make you a victim by disrupting your finances. This can result in a great deal of time and money on your part to undue the damage.
How can it happen and what can you do to prevent it? Here are some common scenarios to watch for:
- Lost or stolen wallet or checkbook
This is the most commonly reported source of information used to commit fraud. With these items, a thief can obtain credit under your name or sell the information. Report these items which are lost or stolen immediately to your credit card company or banking institution.
- Mail Theft
People search mailboxes for bank statements, pre-approved credit card applications, even tax forms. If you are going to be gone for any length of time, consider having your mail held at the post office.
- Dumpster Diving
This occurs when thieves rummage through dumpsters for personal information. Consider shredding your personal documents if you’re not already doing so.
- Inside Sources
Identity fraud can occur by friends, relatives or live-in care givers. Be sure to secure this type of information and avoid leaving it in plain sight.
